The alien symbiote that bonded with Cletus Kasady separated from its insane host hen he became ill in order to find a new healthy body to bone with. It escaped from its holding cell and used a temporary host to wreak havoc on New York City. When Spider-Man arrived at the scene to stop the alien menace, the Carnage symbiote tried to gain revenge on its enemy by bonding with him and causing him to hurt innocent people as Spider-Carnage. Together, they went berserk and destroyed public property and terrorized New Yorkers until Spider-Man was finally able to free himself from the symbiote's control.
